There are nine options that include single or combinations of $ 5 gold coins, silver dollars, a silver medal, and plated half dollars. They all celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Negro National League, the first successfully organized professional African American baseball league in the United States.

“Just as this game connects families and communities across the country every day, the mint connects Americans through coins,” United States Mint assistant director Ventris C. Gibson said of the Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coin Program. “It is now our great privilege to connect America with the extraordinary legacy of Negro League Baseball.”

Coin surfaces contain the collector’s qualities of Proof and Uncirculated. Proof coins are the highest quality coins made by the US Mint. They have frosted design elements that stand out against mirror-like backgrounds. Uncirculated coins have a matte finish and are unique when compared to regular circulation coins found in change.

Design and specifications of the commemorative coins of the Negro League

The front (head) of the Negro League 5 dollar gold coin features a portrait of the founder of the Negro National League, Rube Foster, along with his signature. The inscriptions read “NEGRO LEAGUES BASEBALL”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, “2022” and “LIBERTY”. The front was designed by Laurie Musser and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.

The reverse (tail side) of the $ 5 coin shows the gesture of tilting the cap, an important sign of respect for the players. The labels include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “THEIR LEGACY PLAYS ON”, “$ 5” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. This design is the work of Donna Weaver. It was sculpted by Eric David Custer.

As for the silver dollar, its front features a pitcher in the center of the throw with the baseball in the foreground and baseball seams as an edge. Labels are “IN GOD WE TRUST”, “2022” and “LIBERTY”. Matt Swaim designed the front and Eric David Custer designed it.

All Negro League silver dollars have an inverted design that shows a player’s eye view of a playing field being delivered to the catcher on the plate, along with the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “$ 1” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Don Everhart designed the back picture and Craig A. Campbell shaped it.

Each half-dollar front features a Negro Leagues tour bus that served as their home on the street when players were denied hotels and restaurants. Above the bus, we see a hitter who is meant to illustrate his determination to play the game he loves, regardless of challenging circumstances. Labels are “IN GOD WE TRUST”, “LIBERTY”, “2022” and “NEGRO LEAGUES BASEBALL”. Chris Costello designed the picture and John P. McGraw shaped it.

One of the sets includes a Jackie Robinson silver medal. It bears the same design as the Jackie Robinson Congressional Gold Medal, produced by the United States Mint in 2003 to honor Robinson as a great baseball player, civil rights activist and political activist. The obverse shows a portrait of Jackie Robinson. The inscription “JACKIE ROBINSON” appears to the left of the portrait, followed by “A LIFETIME OF ADVOCACY FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE & HUMAN DIGNITY”. “ACT OF CONGRESS 2003” is written near the edge.

Surcharges support Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

Approved by the Negro Leagues Baseball Centennial Commemorative Coin Act (Pub. L. 116-209), product prices include surcharges of $ 35 for every $ 5 gold coin; $ 10 for every silver dollar; and $ 5 for every half dollar. Provided that the products bring in more than their production and output costs, the surcharges for educational and public programs and exhibitions are paid to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

“The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is excited to partner with the United States Mint in the release of these historic coins that perfectly capture the Negro Leagues’ winning spirit,” said Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. “We hope that collectors and baseball fans alike will purchase these coins and support the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum’s efforts to ensure that the Negro Leagues legacy and important lessons live on.”

Later that year, on a date yet to be determined, the US Mint will issue a second commemorative series known as the 2022 National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Commemorative Coin Program.
