A phenomenal collection of more than 500 rare English coins certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is on offer from SINCONA this month.

The auction includes gold rarities from 600 years of history, including a copy of the beloved “Una and the Lion”, a coin issued in honor of the young Queen Victoria. The invitation to tender for SINCONA Auction 72: SINCONA British Collection Part 1 is already running for November 21, 2021.

The Una and the Lion, graded NGC PF 63 Ultra Cameo, is offered as part of a 15-coin Great Britain 1839 proof set (lot 852). Widely regarded as the finest British coin, the obverse depicts the young queen while the reverse depicts her as the figure of Lady Una leading a lion in a scene inspired by Edmund Spenser’s epic poem “The Faerie Queene”.

The lot includes 14 other coins, from farthing to sovereign. They are classified from NGC PF 63 through NGC PF 66 Cameo. More than a week before the sale, the bid for the lot was already above the starting price of CHF 250,000 (around $ 275,000) and is likely to be much higher.

The auction includes several other proof sets, including an 1826 set (lot 828) issued under King George IV. It is headed by a 5 sovereign rated NGC PF 63 Ultra Cameo and contains 10 additional coins.

“NGC is proud to have certified the SINCONA British Collection, the scope of which is overwhelming,” said Ben Wengel, NGC Senior Finalizer of World Coins. “These coins not only tell the history of England, but also depict the ascending journey of numismatics itself from the Middle Ages to modern times.”

To celebrate these special coins, NGC put a special label on them that combines the British flag and the Matterhorn, a Swiss mountain that represents the highest achievement.
