Pobjoy Mint – British Indian Ocean Territory: Ninth £ 2 coin in the Queen’s Beast series featuring the Black Bull of Clarence

The Treasury Department of the British Indian Ocean Territory has issued its ninth coin, which is part of the commemorative coin series dated 2021, entitled “The Queen’s Beasts. ”Based on 10 heraldic mythical or actual animals depicting the genealogy of Queen Elizabeth II, each one is depicted as a royal supporter of England and is accompanied by a shield or crest bearing the badge or crest of a family that was with is linked to the ancestry of the British monarch. As part of the Queen’s coronation ceremonies, 10 statues depicting the animals were commissioned in 1953 and placed at the entrance to the Sovereign of Westminster Abbey.

The bimetal coins are manufactured by the Pobjoy Mint at their facilities in Surrey, England, on behalf of the British Indian Ocean Territory Department of the Treasury. The coin motif depicts the bull’s torso with a shield on the right depicting the Royal Arms of England, which has been in use for over 200 years. The shield has two quarters with the golden lions of England adopted by Richard I and the other two with the golden lilies of France added by Edward III to substantiate his claim to the French throne. Above the primary design is the text THE BLACK BULL OF CLARENCE and below is the name of TWO POUNDS. The front features an image of HM Queen Elizabeth II as created by the Pobjoy Mint and is an exclusive design. The issuing authority UK TERRITORY OF THE INDIAN OCEAN surrounds the image of the queen and the year of issue 2021 can be seen right below.
